Dona Onete is one of the most significant figures in Amazonian music and popular culture. Her trajectory, marked by orality, riverside life and the strength of her artistic presence, articulates territory, memory and expression in a language all her own.
At the invitation of Mini Kerti, director of Conspiração Filmes — one of Brazil’s leading independent production companies — we developed the graphic system for the documentary “Dona Onete — Meu Coração Neste Pedacinho Aqui”, winner of the “Best Documentary Direction” award at the Rio Film Festival.
The graphic system was built around an exclusive typographic design, developed by hand based on vernacular references from popular signage in the Amazon region. The lettering preserves the gesture and irregularity of handwriting, drawing close to the orality present in Dona Onete’s music.
